On February 27, 2014, a three year old girl was killed by the family dog in High Point, North Carolina, near Winston-Salem. The dog happened to be a pit bull. Whether pit bull attacks have actually increased or whether it is just the media coverage of such attacks that has increased is difficult to discern. Nevertheless, in some circles, pit bulls are considered aggressive and dangerous animals that pose a danger to the public. To others, they are loyal dogs that, when socialized properly, pose no threat.
